Project SMART is a clinical trial for men who have sex with men or who identify as gay or bisexual, and are interested in cutting down their drinking but not necessarily stopping. The full course of the study is 9 months which includes a 3-month treatment phase and a 6-month follow-up phase. The treatment phase of the study consists of medication and counseling. Participants will either take the FDA-approved medication Naltrexone or a placebo pill. In addition to the medication, participants will either come into our office for weekly counseling (a combination of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) or bi-weekly medication management. Data collection for this study is now complete and we are assessing the outcomes.
